Update Jan 2017 This game seems to still be popular even though it was made more than 7 years ago and uses software (flash) that a lot of browsers do not even have. This seems to be because there are quite a few links directly to this page - most users come from Google. I guess this is because this game is quite specific in the language that is practiced; teachers can study time telling in class and then get their students to review the content here. At the same time, to me this game looks quite dated and unappealing. I don't think the game itself is very interesting and think the menus are quite out of place. What's more, the game won't work at all on mobile or tablet devices. I don't have any plans to make a new version of this game, but will continue to keep an eye on the visitor numbers.

Practice telling the time in English with this fun game.

At the first screen there is a clock that you can play around with. As you move the hands of the clock to different times you can read how that time is told in English. So if you adjust the clock to half past six then the English way of saying that time is shown.

I hope that English learners can use this to study or review how to tell the time in English. This can often be a difficult area for learners of English as a second language. In Thai for example the day is divided into four parts instead of two. However telling the time is an important and useful part of learning a language.

After the first screen you can play a game where you have to read the text and the click on the clock that shows the time being described. I hope that by playing this game learners can re-enforce the language they study from the clock on the first screen. The challenge of the game comes in helping the small man across the bridge by not making any mistakes. I hope that you can enjoy playing this game and can learn and review some English while doing so. Leave any comments you have below in English.

This game uses HTML5 and javascript. For the previous flash version click here

This game is a version of the classic game concentration. Intended here to help students learn vocabulary items by matching images and words. You can also listen to the audio when you look at the images. The game is simple and hopefully fun. You click on pairs of squares and match the words to the pictures. If you reveal a matching pair of picture - word then you get points and those squares disappear. You have to match all the images and words as quickly as possible. The concentration part comes in remembering where the images or words are. The time you have to match all the squares runs down quickly and so you have to be faster and faster in each round.

As with other games you can choose the content you like from the list of vocabulary items. The same set of vocabulary items repeats continuously and so you can get repeated exposure to the same target language. Then you can exit and switch to a different set of vocabulary items and play again. At the end of the game there is a table to show the highest scoring learners.

Matching the pairs helps learn the vocabulary items as it allows for an association between the images, text and audio. By revealing the image and hearing the audio at the same time, an association is formed. Then when the matching text is revealed, the association is further strengthened. Because of this, it is quite important to hear and listen carefully to the audio. While I don't think it is possible to completely learn a whole set of content just from playing this game, I think it is possible to learn a few new items from a set while also reviewing other items.

The previous version of this game had a timer which ran down quickly and required you to move and think quickly. A few people suggested that it would be better if the game were slower and the user were able to think without being rushed. That that basis, this version does not have a time as a challenge element; however, there it does keep track of the number of turns, or reveals, that have been made. It is hoped that this will maintain an element of challenge, so that the game is still interesting, while also allowing enough time to think and focus on the items.

I really hope that you like this game and can have fun learning and improving. Leave a comment below in any language you like. Comments need to be approved by me first due to excessive spam and offensive postings.

Contemporary Literature

This semester, Contemporary Literature (21L.488) deals with Irish literature, a subject broad and deep. To achieve a manageable volume of study, the course focuses primarily on poetry and prose, at drama's expense, and on living writers, at the expense of their predecessors. Each class session follows a discussion format, often with students assigned to lead-off or summarize the day's topic.

Countable nouns are things we can count, like things and people. Uncountable nouns are things we can't count or can't divide into separate parts, like ideas, information, category words, and some liquids and foods. See examples of countable and uncountable nouns in this English lesson.

This is a geography game for studying English countries vocabulary. The intended purpose is to learn English and the target audience for this game is English language learners. Specifically Learners of English as a second language. The target vocabulary of this game is countries and words related to countries such as the adjective to describe a country or the capital city of a country. The aim of this game is to help ESL learners to study and remember the names of countries. I tried to make this game in a fun way which presented somewhat of a challenge to players. Learning the English words for different countries is an important part of learning the language as people often learn English so that they can communicate with people from all different countries and so I think it's a good idea to have a good knowledge of the English words for a wide range of countries.

This is a vocabulary game for practicing English vocab items. It’s similar to other games on this site with a few differences.
You can choose a set of content to use. The sets are all of ten items and there are more than five hundred different items.
When the game starts you will see a bunch of images and then hear or read a word. You simply click on the matching image and your counter then moves to that image and stays on it. At the same time there is a counter running down from five to zero. Once this reaches zero only the correct image will stay all the rest will disappear. If your counter is on the correct vocabulary item then you survive. Otherwise the game is over for you.
The idea is to practice matching images with words and sounds and to practice English vocabulary in (hopefully) a fun way. The countdown gets faster and faster and so you should be challenged by the speed. Eventually the count down goes too quickly and the game finishes.
The set of ten vocabulary items repeats continuously and so you get repeated exposure to the same items.
