Surveys the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuronal communication. Covers ion channels in excitable membrane, synaptic transmission, and synaptic plasticity. Correlates the properties of ion channels and synaptic transmission with their physiological function such as learning and memory. Discusses the organizational principles for the formation of functional neural networks at synaptic and cellular levels.

Children with Down syndrome can learn PHONICS too with Gemiini!

“I am a mother of three kids and have a son who is 6 years old that has Down syndrome. We were so lucky to have met Laura and have been using Gemiini for approx. 2 months with our son. His reading and articulation have improved drastically in that short amount of time and we can't wait to see where he goes with this! I homeschool him and had been teaching him to read all year, but since using Gemiini his reading level has probably tripled. He was struggling to read two-vowel words at the end of the school year and now after these 2 months he is probably reading at a 1st grade level. What's so amazing is that we can understand what he's saying!! He was very hard to understand but with the articulation tools on Gemiini we are amazed with the results. The program is easy to use and it is very effective for kids with Down syndrome who are visual learners like our son. We couldn't be more pleased!”

(Here is a video of Ingrid's son clearly reading phonetically:

It is well known that even very young children with DS can learn to sight read. There is a misconception, however, that people with DS cannot learn phonics and therefore, many are not taught with the amount of intensity and repetition required. This results in a sort of artificial ceiling of 6th grade reading ability. Many students with DS simply stop academically in middle school.

It doesn't have to be this way!

Learning phonics at an early age means the difference between reading children’s books or reading whatever is presented. The Gemiini DVM method is revolutionary in that it appears to teach at a deep neurological level. Gains are reported across all modalities, even fine and gross motor.

People with DS can have problems with working memory, and phonics takes longer to learn. Gemiini allows teaching phonics ALONG WITH SIGHT WORDS from preschool.

We also need to take advantage of "down times" in the child's life that aren't being used for learning. Gemiini allows use of travel time in the car and meal times, it can be used during "busy work" time in schools and it can be continued during summer. All in all, we aren't talking a lot of hours. No more than 90 minutes per day total. But the difference could be life-changing.

Gemiini makes learning to read effortless!

Thousands of people, both children and adults use Gemiini to increase reading, language, articulation and social skills. A mother of a child with Down syndrome started a discussion group on FB and now over 4000 people are talking about their experiences. Please contact Mary Kay Deal for an invitation. https://www.facebook.com/marykay.deal...

Gemiini has a corporate policy that no one will be left without it due to an inability to pay, so tuition depends on financial situation. Please see the Tuition and Scholarship tab at gemiini.org

Coffee and Cigarettes: Second-Hand Smoke and Smoke-Free Laws
Rating
0.0 stars

This analysis case explores second-hand smoke and its impact on the decision to institute a smoking ban in the outdoor seating area of a popular coffee bar. In working through the case, students discuss the medical, ethical, legal, and societal issues of smoking in public areas. in addition, they devise experimental schemes for collecting data to determine how profitability is affected by a smoking ban. The case could be used in many science courses, including introductory biology and chemistry, in addition to liberal arts courses that deal with public policy, such as political science or civics. It could also be used in a course in public health or adapted to a business/management class.

This course is an introduction to computational theories of human cognition. Drawing on formal models from classic and contemporary artificial intelligence, students will explore fundamental issues in human knowledge representation, inductive learning and reasoning. What are the forms that our knowledge of the world takes? What are the inductive principles that allow us to acquire new knowledge from the interaction of prior knowledge with observed data? What kinds of data must be available to human learners, and what kinds of innate knowledge (if any) must they have?

Describes how economic theory is linked to economic evaluation techniques like cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis and to introduce students to many concepts that are specific to economic evaluation. Introduces students to the many varieties of economic evaluation to establish a common terminology. Discusses cost-benefit with a demonstration of how this type of evaluation is most clearly linked to economic theory. Explores other theories and concepts, including cost measurement, benefit valuation, and incremental decision-making. Finally, explores recommendations on performing economic evaluations that are made in the United States with a focus on how these are related to underlying economic theory and other concepts.

Cooling Off a Warming Planet: Analyzing the Tradeoffs in Policies for Climate Change
Rating
0.0 stars

This role-playing case on climate change policy is designed to engage student groups in parallel discussions on policy instruments and packages for controlling greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, student groups discuss cap-and-trade and carbon tax policies for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Each group has four students representing one of the following characters: climate scientist, economist, political sociologist, and the staff expert on science related policy. Students study the policies from a holistic perspective and explore related social, economic and environmental issues. In the end, each group drafts a statement for the senator that includes choices and recommendations based on these different views. This case is appropriate for introductory environmental studies and environmental economics courses once students have been introduced to the basic technical and scientific information on climate change.
